How do APIs to Get Bank Transactions Work?
The exchange of financial data between banks and third-party applications is made possible by APIs. An API call is usually initiated by a third-party service that is routed to the bank’s servers. Think of the API as a bridge between the two, ensuring that data is transferred quickly and securely so that businesses and developers have real-time access to the most up-to-date financial information.
Generally, the bank transaction API data is categorized and cleaned, which makes it much more manageable for the end user. Categorization can include breaking down transactions into expenses, income, transfer, and other categories. Cleaning involves eliminating errors and redundancies. Once the data is categorized and cleaned, and enhanced with transaction analytics, the financial institution can empower customers with financial analytics, budgeting tools, personalized recommendations, and other useful products and services.
Type of Transactions
Through our platform API, Envestnet | Yodlee provides access to the following transaction data.
- Merchant: The name of the merchant associated with the transaction.
- Date: The value provided will be either postDate or transactionDate. postDate takes higher priority than transactionDate, except for the investment container as only transactionDate is available.
- Amount: The amount of the transaction as it appears at the FI site.
- Description: The amount of the transaction as it appears at the FI site.
- Type: The nature of the transaction, i.e., deposit, refund, payment, etc.
- Category: The name of the category assigned to the transaction. This is the category field of the transaction category resource.
